The problem with this was that it encouraged copywriters and webmasters to “stuff” their pages with repetitions of their target phrases, trying to make their pages appear to be the “most relevant” for the phrase.
Hummingbird removes that temptation, by taking into account synonyms and near matches to the phrase. Now, a page that is written in more natural language, with variations and synonyms instead of many repetitions of the same phrase over and over, will get preference in being selected for the search results.
The idea is to try to reward better, more natural writing and discourage stilted, unnatural-sounding keyword-stuffed copy.
